Pantoprazole (Protonix) is a proton pump inhibitor which works by absorbing into the blood stream and eventually acting on the K+/H+ ATPase pump which secretes stomach acid from the stomach’s parietal cells. It is effective in the treatment of heartburn, ulcers, and other secretory conditions.
Take this medication by mouth with water, it can be taken with or without food.
Do not crush break or chew the tablets.
It may take a few days before this medicine begins to work. Talk to your doctor if your symptoms are not improving or are getting worse.
Your doctor may require blood work while taking this medicine.
Low magnesium levels, liver disease, pregnancy, allergic reaction history, breastfeeding, trying to become pregnant.
Allergic reactions (hives, rashes, itching, swelling of the face or mouth), trouble breathing, bone pain, muscle pain, muscle spasms, joint pain, dark colored urine, heartbeat changes(fast heartbeat), seizures, tremors, yellowing of the skin or eyes, excessive fatigue, fever, sore throat, lightheadedness or fainting, chest pain, unusual bleeding or bruising.
Diarrhea, constipation, headache, nausea, dry mouth.
40-80 mg by mouth once daily for 4-8 weeks.
40 mg by mouth once daily for up to 8 weeks.
20 mg by mouth once daily for 4 weeks.
40 mg by mouth twice daily.
