Chances of discovering a new drug

Hi Everyone,

I am considering going back to school for a Ph.D. in a drug discovery science such as medicinal chemistry. My dream is to some day discover a new drug or pharmaceutical technology. Some people have said that the chances of discovering a successful drug are extremely low and that I am more likely to end up with a boring industry job.

I am looking for any guidance or new information regarding the impact of most drug discovery Ph.D.'s.
